Marvin Vettori defeated Karl Roberson, and Cynthia Calvillo beat Jessica Eye last night at the UFC on ESPN 10, in two biggest fights of this event.
Vettori Finishes Roberson Quickly
The Italian fighter was more than efficient against Roberson with whom he had pretty intensive intro for this fight. The two didn’t care about showing a decent behavior and sportsmanship but instead created bad blood.
It is why many anxiously expected this event and hoped to see s big brawl, possibly one of the best this year. However, the entire fight lasted for 4:17, which was the exact moment in the first round once Roberson tapped out and lost. Vettori managed to submit the 29-year old, and after that loudly celebrate his triumph.
The Italian was more aggressive, and he did try to dictate the tempo right from the start. Vettori was the one who attacked first, but Roberson defended well and even managed to take down his rival to the ground, but couldn’t maintain the initiative.
Vettori skillfully got out from that problematic situation, changing the momentum, and in no time found himself having an advantage. He would quickly start to unleash ground and pound combinations before getting on Roberson’s back and setting up a rear-naked choke.
For Vettori, this was the third straight win, and 15th in his pro-career. After this streak, he needs to be considered as one of the elite guys in the middleweight division. We could see him shortly in some headliner because he definitely deserves that.
As for Roberson, he now has three wins and losses in the previous six events. It seems that he needs to work much harder in order to get some notable names in his resume.
Calvillo Better than Eye
Cynthia Calvillo defeated Jessica Eye via unanimous decision and made one step towards receiving an invitation for the title fight in the flyweight division. She would display consistent and convincing performance against an experienced veteran even though this was her first match in this category.
Eventually, all three judges scored in Calvillo’s favor, 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47. Just to mention that Eye sat at place No.1 in the flyweight ranking before this match and that Calvillo seemed pretty dominant against her.
She was in control all the time, especially on the ground where Eye didn’t have the slightest of chances to do any harm. Furthermore, it was she who was inferior and who received torture.
Calvillo stated following the fight that she didn’t have enough time and resources for preparing even better because COVID-19 pandemics forced her to change the entire schedule of preparations.
After losing to Carla Esparza, at the UFC 219, the Calvillo defeated Poliana Botelho, Cortney Casey, and now eye, posting also a draw against Marina Rodriguez.
For Eye, this was the second loss in the previous three events and the second straight fight in which she missed the weight. Her current shape is not very good, and even though Eye had several wins prior to this defeat and the one against Valentina Shevchenko in the flyweight title match, she isn’t looking sharp as expected.
