Women’s soccer has been included on the Olympic schedule since the Atlanta Games in 1996. Unlike the men’s tournament, the women’s tournament enables teams to field their strongest possible squads, as there is no cap on the ages of the players involved. Therefore, the Olympics is regarded as the second most prestigious event on the women’s schedule.

Since 1996, four teams have won the top prize in the competition, with the United States leading the overall medal table with four victories. Germany, Canada, and Norway have all won the top prize on one occasion. Meanwhile, Sweden have been a dominant team in the competition after finishing second in each of the last two editions.

Emma Hayes will take charge of the U.S. for the first time at the Olympics, as the team look to get back to the top of the women’s game. The U.S. endured a miserable 2023 after losing their grip on the World Cup. However, they look an excellent chance to go deep in the tournament this year.

Spain and Brazil are two of the more interesting contenders for the top prize, with both winning recent major honors. Brazil won the Copa America in 2022, while Spain were recently crowned World Cup winners. However, the chances of both teams could hinge on their chances of topping Group C.
