Hungary vs England Preview

Three Lions In Complete Control

England were undeniably one of the standout teams at the European Championships this past summer. However, they weren’t able to end their long wait for an international trophy, as they were beaten by Italy on penalties at Wembley in the final of EURO 2020. Not for the first time, a penalty shootout was the Achilles heel for the Three Lions, as Jadon Sancho, Buyako Saka and Marcus Rashford missed from the spot to give Italy the win. However, that shouldn’t diminish the steps that Southgate’s side made throughout the summer, as they performed excellently throughout the competition.

The standout wins came in the knockout rounds, as they beat Germany in a major tournament for the first time since 1966, while they also recorded their biggest knockout win ever in a major tournament against Ukraine. England also overcame the biggest hurdle that has hindered them since 1966, as they won a semi-final against Denmark 2-1. World Cup qualification has been straightforward to this point for England, as they have won all three games that they have played. The Three Lions have scored nine goals and have conceded just once, and also look to be in a commanding position with seven games of the group to go.

Hungary Looking For Another Shock Result

Despite not making it out of their group at the EUROs, Hungary did spring a surprise by the performances that they put in throughout the summer. Few expected them to pick up a single point in the group after they were drawn alongside Germany, France and Portugal. In that respect, they defied expectations, as they claimed very good draws against France and Germany. It could have been so many for Hungary too, as they were on the verge of the knockout rounds, as they led Germany heading into the final ten minutes.

However, they weren’t able to hold on, which meant that they finished bottom of the group, but they were by no means disgraced. Qualification for next year’s World Cup has started reasonably well for Hungary, as they currently sit in second place in the group after three games. They have won two games, and were also held by Poland. No side has scored more goals than Hungary, but they have conceded four goals in the three games that they have played.

Hungary vs England Prediction

Hungary shown throughout the summer that they can perform against the very best. However, England have been one of the standout sides in the world over the past couple of years, and it looks hard to see anything other than a win for Southgate’s side on the road this week.
