Jamaica vs USA Preview
America Looking Strong
The United States have qualified for the World Cup on ten previous occasions. However, it’s unlikely that they have ever had the quality that they currently have in this squad in recent times. They are looking like an excellent chance of reaching the finals in Qatar next year, and moved to the top of the standings with a victory in their fixture against Mexico at the weekend. It was one of the strongest showings from the American national side in qualification, as they managed to inflict a first defeat of qualifying on Mexico, and leapfrog them to the top of the standings. All the drama in the match came in the last 15 minutes.
Christian Pulisic put the Americans ahead with 15 minutes remaining, before Weston McKennie ensured the points were staying in the States ten minutes later. There was a sour moment for the hosts towards the end, as Miles Robinson was sent off with a minute remaining. However, the US now have a three-point advantage in the race for automatic spots and have the joint best attacking and defensive records.
Jamaica Hoping For Late Charge
Jamaica have only made it to the World Cup on one previous occasion. That previous appearance in the World Cup came back in 1998, as they were eliminated in the group stages in France. They may not have given up on reaching the World Cup next year just yet, but they do have a five point difference to make up to reach the playoff spot. There have been signs that they could be building momentum in the last two international breaks, as they are unbeaten in three coming into this fixture.
They would have been desperately frustrated that they didn’t take a second straight win from their last game, as they scored a last minute equaliser to allow El Salvador to take a point. The ever-impressive Michail Antonio had scored the opening goal for Jamaica in the draw.
Recent Meetings
The United States have beaten Jamaica on 19 occasions in the last 30 meetings. They have also won each of their last four against Jamaica, with their only defeat in five coming in a 1-0 loss in an international friendly in June 2019. USA won the last meeting in October 2-0.
Jamaica vs USA Pick & Prediction
Jamaica are certainly moving in the right direction, but this is a tricky looking fixture for them. The United States should be able to get the win, which would maintain their lead at the top of the standings and take them one step closer towards qualification for the World Cup.
