Mr. Pitaro pointed out that as NFL TV rights are expiring, the Silicon Valley might be the next place to offer big money to broadcast one of America&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.offshoresportsbooks.com\/news\/nfl-hits-22-7m-average-viewers-for-opening-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">most-watched athletic competitions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far CBS, NBC, FOX and NC all have deals to broadcast the NFL until <strong>2022<\/strong>. All of the companies represent mainstream broadcasters, but news media companies are now looking into the same opportunities, their names include <strong>Amazon<\/strong>, <strong>DAZN<\/strong>, <strong>Hulu<\/strong>, <strong>YouTube<\/strong>, <strong>Google<\/strong>, <strong>Facebook<\/strong> and others.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking\nabout the possibility of tech giants snapping up multi-billion\ncontracts (presently the contracts for TV rights are valued at $15.2\nbillion), Mr. Pitaro had the following to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> \u201cI have no idea if they\u2019re going to be interested specifically in \u2018Monday Night Football,\u2019 but I do believe that several new media companies are going to be interested in acquiring more NFL rights.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He then\ncontinued to elaborate, cited by the Associated Press:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:right\">\n<em>I still very much like ESPN\u2019s hand, if you look at what we offer\nin terms of production expertise, in terms of the scale and scope, in\nterms of what we can do with the game, around the game,\n\u2018SportsCenter,\u2019 all of our original programming, how we can drive\nvalue for our league partners I think is really the differentiator.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\nThe Difficulties ESPN Faces \n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\nMr. Pitaro said that competitors are popping up from everywhere,\nmaking it difficult for ESPN\n\u2013 and any broadcaster for that matter \u2013 to quite keep up with the\ncompetition. <strong>Disney<\/strong> and ESPN have been trying to diversify the\ncrowds they attract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> The companies launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/hollywood\/la-fi-ct-sports-betting-espn-20190311-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">a sports betting show<\/a> dedicated to tipping bettors as to the possible outcomes of events, and the networks have been focusing on <strong>electronic sports<\/strong>, collectively known as esports.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\nhave been quite a few things happening in broadcasting space. Mr.\nPitaro also commented on how different production problems are\naddressed in general, including a confusing element in Monday&#8217;s\n<strong>Houston-New Orleans<\/strong> game whereby a yellow\nbackground had spectators confused that a flag had been thrown in the\nfield. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing the threat\nof tech giants snapping up NFL broadcasting rights is going to be\nwhat ESPN needs to talk about, Mr. Pitaro explained. He&#8217;s not the\nfirst executive that understands that competition is going to get\nstiffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Netflix<\/strong>, a video streaming platform \u2013 perhaps one of the first popular pioneers of the service \u2013 has been coming under a lot of pressure to attract viewership.
