The state\u2019s total sports handle dropped by 42%.\n<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"delawares-latest-results-42-drop-in-handle\">Delaware\u2019s Latest Results 42% Drop in Handle <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Delaware\u2019s<\/strong> sportsbook took a tumble in the overall sports handle they generated during the month of August. While Pennsylvania\u2019s result soared, Delaware continued to decline. The amount that was lost on total wagers reached the staggering <strong>42% year-over-year<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main sportsbooks in the state, to name <strong>Delaware<\/strong>\n<strong>Park<\/strong>, <strong>Dover<\/strong> <strong>Downs<\/strong> and <strong>Harrington<\/strong> <strong>Raceway<\/strong>\nclaimed mere $4.4 million which was grossly below the $7.7 million staked in\nAugust 2018. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sports lottery wagers data came directly from the\nDelaware Lottery. Delaware came close to hitting its all-time low from July,\n2019 when the state posted merely <strong>$3.9 million<\/strong> in total handle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, the percentage of revenue remained fairly high\ncompared to the poor overall performance of the segment. Overall, though\nrevenue dropped by <strong>28.5% <\/strong>compared to the same month last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly enough, the number of total wagers\nplaced was <strong>131,276<\/strong>. The figure improved on August\u2019s results when 111,870\nbets were committed by bettors. What this showed was that people had been making\nsmaller-value wagers overall, but more of those as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delaware Park managed to bite the bulk of all bets,\nwith <strong>$2.8 million<\/strong> going its way or 63% of all wagers in the state.\nSecond came Harrington Raceway, which notched up a 48% month-over-month\nincrease and raked in stakes worth $758,077. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delaware overall has been affected by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/delaware-sports-betting-2018-5\">expanding sports betting <\/a>in native states, including Pennsylvania, New York and West Virginia. As a result, fewer people have been willing to cross state borders to place a wager, which has directly affected the overall financial performance of the state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"expansion-hurts-delaware\">Expansion Hurts Delaware<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A fairly small state with population below $1 million\npeople, Delaware has been one of the first states to introduce sports betting,\nlegalize online gambling and join a compact with Nevada and New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until 2018, the state\u2019s unique geographical location\nallowed it to pull sports betting enthusiasts from across the state line, but\nthis has now changed as more states are in the process of legalizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of Delaware\u2019s neighbors has legalized or is on\nthe way to legalizing the industry, leaving the small state with a smaller active\nbase of players. Delaware is unlikely to recover \u2013 instead the state will need\nto establish a new baseline which will reflect the current legal changes in\nneighboring states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this being said, the news isn\u2019t ideal for Delaware, but it isn\u2019t necessarily bad to begin with. For instance, this hasn\u2019t stopped <a href=\"https:\/\/delawarestatenews.net\/business\/new-business-delaware-native-launches-sports-wagering-resource\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">natives to keep developing their sports betting businesses<\/a>.
