Before Betting on Yankees vs Cardinals Aug 5
Some heavy hitters converge on Busch Stadium this weekend as the New York Yankees visit the St. Louis Cardinals. There are sure to be some fireworks in a series that features Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo, Paul Goldschmidt, and Nolan Arenado and the offshore odds have the Yankees as pretty significant favorites across the board.
Rizzo will be sure to hear some boo-birds from the St. Louis faithful being an ex-Cubs player, but New York has bigger fish to fry as losers of three of their last four. Of course it’s easy to get complacent when you have a 10.5 game lead in the AL East, but the Cardinals are in the opposite position as they’ve finally climbed to a tie with the Brewers atop the NL Central. The last 50+ games of the season seem like they’ll all be must win for the Redbirds, especially the Yankees vs Cardinals series opener on Friday.
New York is a big favorite because they seem to have the edge in the pitching matchup with Nestor Cortes, Jr. (9-3, 2.53 ERA) on the mound. Cortes hit a couple bumps in June going 2-2 with a 4.15 ERA, but he’s bounced back nicely with a 3-0, 2.60 mark in July.
Albert Pujols is the only Cardinals player to have faced Cortes, and he hit a HR in his lone AB vs. the Yankees starter. Therefore it’s hard to know what kind of run support Dakota Hudson (6-6, 4.10 ERA) will get as he continues to trudge through one of his toughest seasons in the majors. Hudson gave up 2 ER over 4.1 IP in his lone start since the All-Star break in what ended up being a 7-6 loss to the Nationals.

St. Louis is coming off a sweep of the Cubs and wins in 6 of their last 7 overall. The Yankees have the pitching edge on Friday night but at the same time New York has been tripping up lately, going 13-13 in July and starting off August 1-2. This would be the time to strike for St. Louis.
