The New York Yankees and New York Mets are set to face off for the first time this season in the 2024 Subway Series. The Yankees (52-28) have been among the league’s best teams, while the Mets (37-39) have struggled.

The Yankees fell a game behind the Phillies for the MLB’s overall top spot, but remain as one of the very best teams in the league. The acquisition of Juan Soto has paid off nicely, especially in tandem with the re-siging of Aaron Judge, who leads the MLB in home runs and OPS. New York’s pitching rotation is their surprise standout this season, though they’ve had a bit more troubles lately. The Yankees have gone just 3-7 in their last 10 games, giving them plenty to improve upon during this series against the Mets.
Speaking of the last 10 games, the Mets have done the opposite of the Yankees, surging back into relevancy. They hold an 8-2 record in that span, spurred on by the 7-game Grimace winning streak. New York now sits just one game out of a Wild Card spot in the NL, but has a lot of work to do to seperate themselves from the competition. This series against the Yankees will be a crucial test to see if the Mets can keep up their winning ways as the season approaches its midway point and deadline sellers and buyers are determined.

The Yankees and Mets meet four times this season. The first two games take place now in Queens, before they rematch for two more games in the Bronx after the All-Star break. The Yankees have long held the advantage in this series and appear to be significantly better once again. That being said, the Mets have looked like the hotter team lately. I expect them to split these two games, getting the better of either Gerrit Cole who is still easing his way back from injury, or Luis Gil, who needs to bounce back from a brutal loss in his last outing.
